PAT Testing

It is a UK regulation that all appliances used in commercial premises should be PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) tested to ensure that they are safe to use. This requirement includes items such as the office kettle, the microwave oven at the childminders in additon to all appliances provided in a rental property.

Active Electrical Solutions are a family business of electricians established for many years in South Woodham Ferrers (operating in the local area as well as Chelmsford, Wickford, Billericay, Brentwood, Danbury, Burnham, Southminster and all surrounding areas in Essex) - as qualified electricians (NICEIC, Part P, JIB) we have many years of performing PAT testing in business and commercial premises, all at very competitive rates.

Is PAT Testing A Legal Requirement?

There is currently no legal requirement for PAT testing. However the UK government has put regulations into place that apply to the maintenance of electrical appliances - the most effective way to ensure that these regulations are met is with PAT testing.

The UK Health and Safety Executive and UK insurance companies will insist that appliances are PAT tested to ensure that there is compliance with regulations incuding;

  • Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974

  • The Electricity at Work Regulations of 1989

  • The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations of 1998

  • The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations of 1999

Non-compliance with the above regulations can result in fines up to £5,000 and/or six months imprisonment. Although PAT testing is not a specific legal requirement with the UK, it makes sense to protect you and your business by making 'best endeavours' to ensure that all appliances are electrically safe - so give Active Electrical Solutions a call.

PAT testing provides the most effective way to identify defects that become apparent the more the appliance is used. Faults in electrical equipment pose a potential hazard, particularly if they are not repaired readily - even though PAT testing itself is not required by law, the consequences of electrical faults should be considered carefully.
